Fly Fishing the Ocean for Salmon
We had 3 full days of successful Fly fishing for Pink Salmon on the Island, and Howe sound. Some incredible weather and remote spots made for some great footage that we are excited to get working on. You know, these Pink Salmon do not always get the respect they deserve. Don’t get me wrong, they aren’t the equivalent to the battle most Coho give you, but this past weekend proved that if you get in front of dime bright fresh fish they can beat you up a little. We had 8 wt’s bent over and a few fish ripped right into the backing pretty fast. No, there were no complaints from the Spooled TV crew at all on this trip, several hook ups and double headers.
However one day was very challenging for starters, these fish were cruising by rolling then diving right away… diving deep!!. The key for us was to be prepared with several lines to chose from. The RIO outbound short (floating) was the first choice, however when things got tough like this we switched to the intermediate tip (RIO outbound short) and it made all the difference. Make sure you have some options when chasing these Salmon, sometimes they want to take tghe Fly in the 3-8 foot range.
This is part one of a few Ocean Fly fishing posts, i’ll follow up soon with some pictures and more info.
Tight lines everyone, take care!!

Trout Season In BC.. we all start somewhere
So I’m at a lake enjoying some early season Lake Fly Fishing and a few other boats move into the area I was fishing. Perfect!! maybe they will figure it out before me
. After a few minutes it was obvious that they were new to the great sport of Fly Fishing but they were having just as much fun as most anglers i come across. GOOD ON THEM!!. After a little small talk and getting to know each other a bit, I threw in a few pointers to help them fish the correct depth and insect at that particular time. They were firing questions over at will and I did my best to answer them and help them allong the way. Am I an expert?? no, have I been at it much longer than them? Yes of course. I learned this way to, rubbing shoulders with more experienced anglers is how I got a ton of my early information years ago. The question is why are so many anglers afraid to pass this info on? sometimes there seems to be this grumpy “get out of my bay, or run” mentality. Maybe some of us get caught up in the pursuit of our perfect day or fish, but lets spread the knowledge! help out our fellow anglers and the lakes and rivers will be a better place
JUST MY TWO CENTS!
PS.. One of the guys happened to be a mechanic, guess where the wifes CRV is going for break work?
LOL
Here are a few links that we feel will help get the beginner or intermediate angler started. They were used by friends and come recommended
Tight lines all!

Chironomid Fishing In BC With Spooled TV
Well its that time of year again, ICE off, anticipation, and Chironomids!!! And I do it every time. Drive up my favorite roads and hit that wall of Snow. Wrong again! Cant blame us though, its been a long off season. I’ll be heading up over the next two weeks and I will pass on as much info as possible.
This time of year you have to battle through that weather, these fish are hungry and dont always follow the traditional high pressure, large hatch feeding triggers. Heck my best day last year was May 27 3 deg, wet snow, full moon, no hatch, water at 44deg, non stop for hours….. Go figure!!
Also.. Special note, get down to Pacific Angler on Broadway to catch Trevors Chironomid course. They promise to have you ready for the water!! time well spent May 18 and 25 at Pacific Angler
Also dont forget to check out Spooled TV’s episode #2 “Angling with Adversity” Chironomid fishing in BC… to get you pump!
Tight Lines all, I’ll be back soon.
